Nigeria Into The Quater-Finals After Edging Past Sweden

A goal from Sadiq Umar was enough to earn Nigeria a 1-0 win against Sweden and take Mikel John Obi's side into the quarter-finals of the Olympics.

Chelsea midfielder Mikel skippered Nigeria at the Amazonia Arena clash in Manaus, and the Super Eagles showed why they are considered among the favourites for the competition after collecting their second win of the Games.

Oghenekaro Etebo scored four goals in his side's 5-4 victory over Japan in the first round of games, but was denied time and again by a superb goalkking display from Sweden's Andreas Linde.

However, Linde was eventually beaten six minutes from time as Umar headed in a fine cross from Stanley Amuzie on the bounce to earn the 1-0 win to send the Super Eagles into the quarters.

Mikel's Super Eagles will face Colombia in their final Group B game, while Sweden will battle it out against Japan to try and land a spot in the last eight.

Arsenal striker Takuma Asano is in fine form for Japan at Rio, scoring his second goal of the Games to help his nation earn a 2-2 draw against Colombia last night to keep their medal hopes alive.
